Cumberland Council has felled a number of trees in Drigg & Carleton recently. When surveyed last summer it was noted that these trees were affected by Ash dieback. Cumberland’s policy is to fell any affected tree on highway or Council land for safety reasons (the trees could splinter and fall at any time and pose a risk to passing traffic and pedestrians) – see their website link below. The policy applies equally to private landowners.

Drigg & Carleton Parish Council owns no land and has taken no part in this policy decision; furthermore the Parish Council cannot and should not prevent Cumberland Council from felling dangerous trees. There are birch trees growing nearby which are unaffected and which will benefit from more sunlight.
If you wish to voice your concerns about the tree felling, please contact Cumberland Council directly.
If landowners have received a letter regarding felling Ash trees and need assistance, please either go to the Cumberland website or contact Cumbria Highways on 0300 373 3736.
