RSPB Presentation – the Common Ringed Plover

14 January, 2025 / 6:00 pm - 6:30 pm

RSPB Presentation
The RSPB has identified the Cumbrian coast to be an important breeding area for a species of conservation concern, the Common Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula).
The shingle beach stretching from Sellafield to Drigg is of high importance due to it holding 15% of the Cumbrian breeding population. Unfortunately, these birds are facing a population decline which is attributed partially to poor nesting success, primarily caused by human disturbance and predation.
In summer 2024, the shingle beach from Sellafield to Drigg was monitored every 2-3 days. 27 nesting pairs were noted, only 3 pairs had chicks that reached fledging age. This is extremely poor and could be improved with some management interventions.
Based on experience elsewhere, the RSPB would like to offer and discuss several possible options to improve breeding success next season.
